What Is A COI

Proof that your policy is active.

A Certificate of Insurance is a document that summarizes your active coverage: who's insured, what's covered, the liability limits, and the policy dates. It's sometimes called an "ACORD certificate," after the standardized form most carriers use.

A landlord, general contractor, or venue will often ask for one before you can start a job or sign a lease. It's proof you carry the coverage you say you do, without handing over your full policy.

Basic vs Custom

Two kinds of certificate.

Most requests are basic. Some need a bit more, and that's fine too.

Standard

Basic COI

For your own records

A straightforward summary of your existing coverage. Most clients ask for this to keep on file, and we can usually issue it the same day you request it.

  • Lists your active coverages and limits
  • Same-day turnaround in most cases
  • No cost, no limit on how many you request
Modified

Custom COI

Names someone else on the certificate

Built when a client, landlord, or general contractor needs to be named as an additional insured, or when the certificate needs specific wording to match a contract.

  • Adds an additional insured or specific endorsement language
  • We cross-check the wording against the actual contract
  • Usually same day, occasionally next business day for complex wording

Also Common

Naming someone as an additional insured.

Sometimes the person asking for your COI isn't the client you work with directly. If you're a contractor working in a building you don't own, the property owner might ask to be listed as an additional insured on your certificate.

That gives them the right to make a claim against your policy too, so if a lawsuit names both of you, your coverage protects them as well. Just tell us who needs to be added and we'll take care of the wording.

Frequently Asked Questions

Certificates of Insurance, answered.

The questions we hear most often about COIs.

A Certificate of Insurance (COI) is a document that summarizes your active business insurance policy: your coverages, liability limits, and policy dates. It's proof of coverage for a client, landlord, or general contractor, not the policy itself.
Text, call, or email us and let us know you need a certificate. Basic COIs are usually issued the same day. If you need someone added as an additional insured, tell us their name and address and we'll build a custom certificate to match.
We send it as a digital file by email or text. From there you can save it to your phone or computer, forward it as an email attachment, or print a physical copy for whoever requested it.
Most commonly when signing a contract, leasing commercial property, or starting a job where the client, landlord, or general contractor requires proof of insurance before work begins.
A basic COI is a standard summary of your existing coverage, usually ready the same day. A custom COI adds specific details a client requests, most often naming their company as an additional insured, and can take a little longer if the wording is complex.
Just let us know who needs to be listed when you request the certificate, including their exact legal name and address. We'll match the wording to whatever the requesting party needs.
No. Basic and custom certificates are both included as part of your policy service. You can request as many as you need, for as many clients or projects as you're working on.
No. A COI is not the policy itself, it's a summary document that proves you have one. The actual terms, conditions, and exclusions of your coverage are governed by the policy your carrier issued to you.
